I like the word “practice” for my time with God because it implies that I need to keep doing it (I’m never finishing this work in me or being done with relationship with Him) and it implies rightly that it’s an imperfect, human thing. I forget it. I skip it. I get distracted. I don’t like what I hear/read. 😉 The difference between myself now and my 7th grade self, in addition to all these kids in my house, is that I know it’s okay. I know that I can pick it up tomorrow and not be struck by lightning or far from God or my purpose. I just pick it back up.

If you struggle with making time for prayer, maybe it will help to shift the way you think about it. When I integrate prayer with my thought life and turn my concerns and thoughts toward Him - instead of inward, or to friends or family - it brings me closer to his heart on each topic. It keeps us connected through the day, especially those busy ones.⁠

This is one happy writer, making my regular stop at the little hut in which Robert Louis Stevenson spent some time writing when he visited King Kalakaua on Oahu many moons ago. Swoon. Okay the Robert mannequin inside freaks me out a little. But I feel a little swirly magic thinking about him doing some deep thinking inside and the resulting beautiful words that I've loved and shared with my kids for years as a result. ⁠

In my weekly email today I started by saying that I probably can't add a drop of inspiration or revelation to what you've already heard about prayer. But I do know that we all long for companionship for our journeys, for answers to the toughest questions of life. Prayer was meant to facilitate that. But more importantly to facilitate relationship between us and our Creator. Let's make a little space this week for conversation with Him, even if it's been awhile. ⁠
