The 8 Primary Emotions

Each of these core emotions comprises other emotions. But it’s helpful to figure out the root emotion underneath what we are experiencing.

Joy - happiness, gratitude, hopefulness

Anger - irritation, frustration, ire

Shame - feeling down about yourself or some part of your identity

Guilt - feeling down about something you did or said

Fear - timidity, anxiety, worry

Lonely - feeling alone in general or in a particular context like work, a relationship, community

Sad - low, down, unhappy, out of sorts, grief

Hurt - offended or saddened by another person’s actions, whether they were intentional or not
